Our clinic offers state of the art equipment for spinal decompression using The Back on Trac. This is a spinal decompression treatment that slowly and gently stretches out the spine. This treatment is applied with the goals of relieving pain and promoting an optimal environment for bulging, degenerating, or herniated disc to heal. The therapy creates a negative intradiscal pressure to promote retraction or repositioning of the herniated or bulging disc. It also creates a lower pressure, which can speed up the healing process. Back on Trac also uses heat and vibration therapy while it works to decompression the spine.
This can not only clear up back pain, but also any pain caused by the pressure put on the nerves. For example, patients who have a herniated disc in the lower back may have shooting sciatic pain down their legs. Relieving the herniated disc will cause that pain to vanish.
Treatment time and frequency will depend on each patient’s unique condition; however, each spinal decompression treatment is usually about ten minutes. Patients usually have treatment a few times a week and are typically finished with treatment within eight weeks.
Back pain due to a herniated or bulging disc can be debilitating, and in the past, surgery was the answer. Today, we have highly-successful advanced technology that allows us to relieve this pain without surgery.
If you are living in pain from a herniated or bulging disc, we will work with you to find a spinal decompression treatment plan that corresponds with your body. Instead of turning to dangerous pain medications that just cover up the problem, ask us if spinal decompression can help you.

Our backs are responsible for carrying the load of everything that we do all day. This puts a lot of pressure on the moving parts of our spines, and can cause the vertebrae and discs to compress, resulting in bulging discs or pressed nerves along the spinal column. Decompression therapy can help to relieve the pressure this can cause. At Keough Chiropractic, Dr. Felicity Keough-Bligh and Dr. Michelle Mashinter offer decompression therapy to St. Charles, MO, area residents.
What Is Compression?
In a perfect world, our vertebrae and discs neatly stack upon one another allowing for optimal flexibility. Sometimes, a blunt impact, twisting, or lifting a heavy load can result in the vertebrae pressing directly onto a disc. This can result in bulging of the disc (herniation) and irritated nerves (such as sciatica).
What Is Decompression Therapy?
Spinal decompression therapy involves stretching the back and spine using a special table so that the spine can be relieved from compression. The goal is to allow for enough decompression so that any bulging discs can make their way back into their proper alignment.
This will result in relief of any pain caused by the compressed disc or irritated nerves in the area.
The technique used can vary from doctor to doctor. Some offices use an inversion table that flips people upside down. Our office uses a traction table that helps to stretch the back slowly and gently without flipping over.
Supplemental Treatments
Decompression therapy is often provided in tandem with other chiropractic treatments. Spinal adjustments help to ensure that the vertebrae along the spinal column are in the proper place, reducing likelihood of future compression. Massage therapy can help soothe the muscles that have been inflamed due to the compression, improving circulation and recovery time.
